SE LABS Ⓡ, the cyber security testing authority, announced today that Norton 360 from Gen Digital protected against all attacks in the latest Security Evaluation Test Report focusing on the macOS operating system.
Using the full-attack chain, just like a real-hacker, the assessment examined how effectively Norton 360 could defend macOS systems against realistic targeted attacks based on current threat intelligence. Norton detected and blocked every threat at the earliest possible opportunity, earning itself a 100% Protection Accuracy Rating.
“Stopping a threat before it has the chance to run and do damage is the ideal outcome in any security test,” says Simon Edwards, CEO and founder of SE Labs. “Norton 360 achieved exactly that in every case. It blocked all of the targeted attacks we deployed preventing our team of testers to gain any meaningful foothold on the system, which is a strong result in a realistic macOS security test.”
The report also highlights a broader point for Mac users. In the absence of third-party real-time protection, SE Labs found that macOS’ built-in protections were not sufficient to stop the sophisticated targeted attacks used in the test. Without additional protection in place, the attacks used in the test would be able to execute, gain control and escalate privileges, creating opportunities for data theft, surveillance, log clearing and file encryption.
That makes Norton 360’s performance particularly significant. Rather than merely detecting threats after activity had begun, it prevented every attack from progressing, demonstrating the value of dedicated third-party protection on macOS against modern targeted threats.
Norton 360 has won a AAA award in SE Labs Security Evaluation macOS Home Anti-Malware. The full report can be downloaded for free from SE Labs’ website.
