SE LABS Ⓡ, the cyber security testing authority, announced today the results of its quarterly endpoint security tests for the enterprise, small business and home user markets. Products include a broad range of anti-virus software, chosen largely due to popularity with users and reputation in the industry.
This quarter’s Home Anti-malware report included two products previously untested by SE Labs, TotalAV and Scanguard. Both are widely promoted through affiliate marketing and therefore reviews and rankings could be influenced more by potential earnings than by objective testing or user experience.
“Choosing the right security software should be based on evidence, not advertising,” says Simon Edwards, founder and CEO of SE Labs. “Although Scanguard achieved 93% Total Accuracy in our tests, this was only thanks to its 100% Legitimate Accuracy rating. Its protection rating was a very poor 81%.”
The purpose of SE Lab’s tests is not simply to see if a product blocks a suspicious file. It is to assess at what stage it manages to and whether it can detect and disrupt a realistic, multi-stage attack before damage is done. Effective endpoint protection must do more than respond to known threats. It must adapt quickly, stop attacks early and resist attempts to bypass defences.
Rating details and how they are calculated are available in the full endpoint security reports, along with the data, so users can develop their own rating chart.
Avast Free Antivirus, Kaspersky Premium and McAfee Total Protection were the only products in the Home Anti-Malware Security Evaluation Test Report to achieve a 100% Accuracy rating in both the Protection and the Legitimate categories. Eight of the products tested achieved an SE Labs AAA rating. Products from Webroot and Scanguard were given an SE Labs AA rating.
“Whether you providesecurity for a global enterprise or run a small business with just a few employees, a single compromised endpoint brings serious consequences. While no product is perfect, some provide a much higher level of protection than others. Our reports make those differences clear,” continues Simon Edwards.
In the Small Business Endpoint Security Evaluation Test Report, products from both Kaspersky and Sophos achieved 100% in each of the tests. All the products tested were awarded AAA ratings, except for Webroot SecureAnywhere Endpoint Protection, which was given an AA rating. Further explanation of this is available on page 11 of the report.
Of the products tested in the Enterprise Endpoint Security Evaluation Test Report, all were given AAA awards, but only those from Broadcom, Kaspersky and Sophos achieved a 100% rating in both the Protection and Legitimate Accuracy tests.
